Cam Davis Wins 2024 Rocket Mortgage Classic
Detroit, MI – Cam Davis (-18) won the 2024 Rocket Mortgage Classic. It was the Australian’s second career PGA Tour win after winning this same tournament in 2021. Davis has not had his best stuff so far this season but found something the past two weeks, noting in his post-round interview with Amanda Balionis that he recently started working with a hypnotherapist.
Unfortunately, Davis’ big win was partially a result of Akshay Bhatia’s misfortune. Bhatia needed a par on the last to force a playoff and three putted the final green from 32 feet. It was Bhatia’s first and only three putt of the week and only his second bogey of the tournament. It was a heartbreaking scene for a young player with all the talent in the world who has been firing on all cylinders of late. This was the second week in a row that Akshay played in the final group on Sunday.
The bogey put Bhatia into a finishing position of T2 alongside Aaron Rai, Davis Thompson, and Min Woo Lee. Thompson is another young player trending in the right direction, Lee a potential superstar waiting for his breakout moment, and Rai a perennial steady performer who seems to thrive in Detroit and on similar setups.
While the field didn’t feature any of the game’s truly big names, it did give golf fans a chance to see lots of great golf and some of the stars of tomorrow. The group that finished T6, two strokes behind the group at T2 were Rico Hoey, Eric Cole, Erik Van Rooyen, and Cameron Young. At this point, Young may be the best player still without a win on the PGA Tour.
Other players who had notable finishes included newly minted pro and amateur winner Nick Dunlap and current amateur (WAGR #4, currently) Luke Clanton (both T10, -14); last year’s champ Rickie Fowler (T31, -9). Meanwhile, the 15-year-old amateur sensation Miles Russell and the highest-ranked player in the field Tom Kim both failed to make the cut. Will Zalatoris withdrew midway through the third round, citing precautious after feeling something in his hip.
Next week, the PGA Tour heads to Silvis, IL for the John Deere Classic. The field includes the likes of Patrick Cantlay, Cam Davis, Jason Day, Sungjae Im, and Jordan Spieth.
