2025 Valero Texas Open Recap

Brian Harman Wins 2025 Valero Texas Open

San Antonio, TX – Brian Harman (-9) won the 2025 Valero Texas Open, beating Ryan Gerard by 3.  It was Harman’s first win since his triumph at the 2023 Open Championship at Royal Liverpool.  Harman shot 75 in challenging final round conditions to hold onto his lead after entering the day three strokes ahead of Andrew Novak and four ahead of Tom Hoge.

Harman was able to use his skill set to take advantage of the tough conditions, much like he did on the links of Hoylake.  While the golf courses are obviously incredibly different, Harman was able to plod his way around and keep the ball in front of him better than anyone else.  His trademark driving accuracy combined with a new zero torque putter to help him make the most of his opportunity.

While it looked like a two horse race between Harman and Novak for most of the day, Novak faltered late, making four bogeys in his last six holes to shoot 76 and drop to T3 at -6.  Gerard was one of the few players to go (relatively) low on Sunday, shooting -3 and vaulting himself up the leaderboard in the process.  Maverick McNealy also ended up T3 with Novak after playing steady golf throughout the week.

Finishing in a group behind them T5 at -4 was the resurgent Bud Cauley, Chan Kim, Patrick Fishburn, Thorbjorn Olesen, Tom Hoge, Ryo Hisatsune, and Chad Ramey.  Other players who had notable performances included Jordan Spieth (T12, -3), Corey Conners (T18, -2), and amateur Ben James (T33, +1).

Not all of the top names in the field fared well, however.  Ludvig Aberg, one of the betting favorites at next week’s Masters tournament, failed to make the cut, as did Akshay Bhatia, Hideki Matsuyama, as did Tom Kim and Sam Burns.

Next week, the eyes of the golf world turn to Augusta, Georgia and Augusta National Golf Club for the Masters.  Scottie Scheffler is the defending champion there and will tee it up against the best players in the game.  It will be one of the rare occasions where all of the best players in the world will play in the same field.
