Dustin Johnson Earns First Career Green Jacket
Augusta, GA – Dustin Johnson (-20) was on another level all week and, in the end, waltzed to a 5 stroke victory at the 2020 Masters Tournament. It marked the first Masters victory and second career major for the world’s number one ranked player. 27-year-old Aussie Cameron Smith and 22-year-old South Korean Sungjae Im tied for second at -15.
DJ has been on an absolute tear lately, finishing no worse than 6th in last seven starts. His four round total of -20 equaled Jordan Spieth and Tiger Woods’ tournament scoring record. Cameron Smith also set a record of his own, becoming the first player to shoot all four rounds of the Masters in the 60s. Im, to his credit, was playing in his very first Masters.
A fall Masters provided several things that were new for golf fans and players alike. In addition to the obvious lack of patrons, the course conditions were softer than they typically are in spring. Perhaps the most exciting thing is that golf fans won’t have to wait another year to watch the game’s best battle it out at Augusta National again. The 2021 Masters Tournament is scheduled for April 8-11.
Finishing behind Smith and Im in solo fourth was Justin Thomas at -12 and finishing one back of him T5 at -11 were Dylan Frittelli and Rory McIlroy. McIlroy opened the week with a disappointing 75 only to click into gear and go 66-67-69 over the final three rounds.
Other players who had notable performances included Brooks Koepka, who finished T7 at -10 with C.T. Pan and Jon Rahm; Bryson DeChambeau who hogged the majority of the headlines going into the tournament had a disappointing and frustrating week and struggled to turn his distance into an advantage, finishing T34 at -2; and Bernhard Langer, who at 63 became the oldest man to make the cut and finished T29 at -3, one stroke better than DeChambeau.
Next week, the PGA Tour will head to Sea Island, Georgia to contest the RSM Classic. Tyler Duncan will defend his title there against a field that includes the likes of Webb Simpson, Tyrrell Hatton, and Sungjae Im.
