The Takomo Lumo M1 putter is a low torque mid mallet with a sleek minimalist look.ย It is one of three putters in the first line of putters released by the direct-to-consumer equipment manufacturer.
Introduction
Takomo has made waves in the golf equipment space since its inception in 2021 by making high quality clubs and keeping prices low with a direct to consumer model.ย The Finland-based company is branching out into putters for the first time after acquiring another Finnish golf brand, Otso Golf Ltd., a company specializing in low torque putters.ย The Takomo Lumo M1 is a rounded mid mallet designed to keep the face square in the backswing and through impact.ย This was my first experience testing anything from Takomo (check out Nate’s review of the Takomo Ignis D2 Fairway Wood HERE).ย Read on to find out how it worked for me.
Looks
At address, the Takomo Lumo M1 putter is strange looking.ย It features a traditional and familiar head shape with a completely untraditional and foreign looking hosel placement.ย It isn’t set up like a typical “zero torque” putter nor like a face balanced mallet, hence the “low torque” signifier.ย While its single bend shaft is standard enough, its entry point into the putter head further towards the center and behind the face makes it look unique.ย At first, I found it a bit jarring and uncomfortable to look at.ย Like anything else, I got more comfortable with it over time.
The Takomo Lumo M1 putter features the same rounded mid-mallet head shape as Otso Golf’s first putter, the D1.ย From what I can tell, the D1 was released in limited quantities shortly before the company was acquired by Takomo, so it’s tough to compare directly, but it looks like the exact same shape.ย It’s a head shape that looks like it wants to be swung on some sort of arc, but the low torque hosel configuration absolutely wants to prevent that and keep the face dead square all the way back and through.ย It’s an interesting combination.
The Lumo M1 putter has a clean, minimalist look, with a matching black/deep matte gray color scheme.ย The branding on the sole and the back of the club are subtle and minimal as well.ย The whole package appears very modern, sleek, and understated.ย The putter is also available in a chrome finish. Sound & Feel
The Takomo Lumo M1 feels firm off the face.ย The sound is a low-pitched ‘knock’ to match.ย Without being too critical, it isn’t among the most pleasurable sounding and feeling putters I’ve tested.ย ย There is very little mass behind the ball at impact, with just maybe 1/4″ or so of material behind the horizontally milled face grooves.ย This gives it a very old school feel off the face.
It is CNC milled from 100% 303 stainless steel, a material often used in milled putters.ย The relative lack of mass behind the ball coupled with its one piece steel construction results in that firm feel and moderate feedback through the hands at impact.ย For better or worse, you will get a good sense of where the ball was struck on the face.
Performance
After my testing, I find it hard to argue too much with the results of the Takomo Lumo M1 putter.ย While it does look funny to my eye, and its sound and feel don’t match my preferences, I can’t say that it doesn’t do what it says it does on the greens.ย The face does everything it can to stay square going back and through, even if the club head looks like it would prefer to swing on an arc.ย Trusting it and leaning into that straight back and through stroke is key with this putter.
Given that the putter is so different from what I typically game, I was surprised how decent the results were.ย Speed control was solid on both slow and moderately quick greens.ย Short putts were holed with average or above average regularity, for me.ย The quality and consistency of the forward roll of the golf ball was very good.ย In the end, it isn’t what I want to see looking down at the ball, and that’s a huge part of the equation for me, but I think the technology in the Takomo Lumo M1 is interesting and unique, and it works well.
Who might be the ideal player suited to the Takomo Lumo M1 putter?ย I think of a player who has typically played a blade, maybe one who hasn’t upgraded putters in a while and is intrigued by the emergence of low- and zero-torque technology in the market and wants to give one a try.ย Then there’s a separate category of Takomo loyalists who already game their clubs through the rest of the bag and will be eager to pick one up just to see how it is. Conclusion
The Takomo Lumo M1 putter is a solid entry into the putter market for Takomo.ย The low torque configuration differentiates itself from other putters on the market with its old school/new school combination.ย Priced at $219 for the silver finish and $239 for black, Takomo continues to offer quality clubs at prices well below those of the big name brands.
