2023 Wells Fargo Championship Recap

Wyndham Clark Earns First Career PGA Tour Victory

Charlotte, NC – Wyndham Clark (-19) won the 2023 Wells Fargo Championship.  He beat Xander Schauffele by four strokes.  Clark has been known as a golfer with extremely high upside since he turned pro in 2017 but was never able to win until now.  He has been playing the best golf of his career in recent weeks.  He has carded six top tens this season and hasn’t missed a cut since October.

The win came at a tough venue against a strong field.  The event’s status as a “Designated Event” means extra FedEx Cup points and extra money for Clark, who now sits at fifth in the FedEx Cup standings.  Schauffele also had a great week but couldn’t go low enough to really push Clark on Sunday, treading water to a round of 70.  Still, the X man remains a good bet to win a big one soon.

Finishing behind Schauffele were Harris English and Tyrrell Hatton (-12).  Tommy Fleetwood and Adam Scott finished T5 one stroke behind them at -11.

Other players who had notable finishes included Michael Kim (7th, -10), who has been playing some of the best golf of his career lately; Max Homa (T8, -9) seemed to find something after cooling off recently following his hot early season form; Rory McIlroy, who has feasted at this golf course over the years, made the cut but didn’t play anywhere near his best, finishing T47 at E.

Next week, the PGA Tour heads to Texas and TPC Craig Ranch for the AT&T Byron Nelson.  K.H. Lee is the defending champion and will highlight a field that also includes Jason Day, Tyrrell Hatton, Scottie Scheffler, and Jordan Spieth.
