Dustin Johnson wins season long race for the FedEx Cup
Atlanta, GA – Dustin Johnson (-21) won the 2020 Tour Championship and FedEx Cup, as well as the $15 million that goes along with it. It is his first FedEx Cup title. After leading the FedEx Cup points race heading into the final week of the 2019-2020 wraparound season, Dustin Johnson started the week with a two shot head start on the second place player, Jon Rahm. Justin Thomas started third at -7, with Webb Simpson in fourth at -6.
DJ caught fire at the right time. At times throughout the season he looked a shadow of himself, but during the playoffs he showed the full force of his skills. After walking away with the Northern Trust, Johnson played rock solid on Sunday, making clutch pars and big birdies to stay ahead of Rahm as well as Justin Thomas and Xander Schauffele.
DJ led the entire way, with other players climbing up the leaderboard to challenge him at times before eventually falling back. In the end, Xander Schauffele and Justin Thomas (-18) tied for second, Jon Rahm (-17) finished in solo fourth, and newly minted Mr. 59 Scottie Scheffler (-14) finished in solo fifth after firing a low round of 65 in the final round.
Some other players who had memorable weeks include the latest major champion Collin Morikawa who finished sixth; Tyrell Hatton who qualified after playing only ten PGA Tour events and finished seventh; Sungjae Im, who briefly shared the lead with Johnson early in the week before having a tough weekend; and Rory McIlroy who notably became a father for the first time just before the tournament began.
Next week, the PGA Tour starts right back up again as the 2020-2021 season kicks off at the Safeway Open in Napa, California. Most of the tour’s top players will take the week off as they prep for the U.S. Open at Winged Foot (September 17-20). Cameron Champ is the defending champion there and will play in a field that includes Phil Mickelson, Jordan Spieth, and Shane Lowry.
