Introduction

It’s not unprecedented for a product’s review to be listed in multiple categories: mini drivers get classified as both “Driver” and “Fairway Wood”.ย  This is, however, the first time that one product has spanned the “Shaft” and “Grip” categories.ย  The Macro Golf SquareStroke Shaft-Handle aims to be, as the name suggests, both the shaft and the handle for your putter.ย  Can this truly unique offering guide the way to better performance on the green?

Looks

Theย Macro Golf SquareStroke Shaft-Handle is one solid piece of carbon fiber that extends from your hands all the way to the club head.ย  It has a glossy black finish that lets you see the carbon fiber.ย  Somehow, despite it being used in golf and other industries for many years, carbon fiber never fails to look cool.ย  There’s minimal branding on the shaft or the handle, just “Macro Square Stroke” and the patent number in clear white text on the handle portion.

What’s most visually engaging about the Macro Golf SquareStroke Shaft-Handle is the unorthodox shape.ย  As you can see in the photos, it starts out as a normal, round shaft, then expands and flattens on the trail side to form the handle.ย  Despite the lack of flashy colors, the look of the SquareStroke will turn heads on the green. Feel

There are two separate but equally important feel considerations with theย Macro Golf SquareStroke Shaft-Handle: the feel of the handle in your hands and the feel that the whole thing creates at impact.ย  Starting with the former, the feel in hand is firm and free of traction, as you’d expect.ย  Leaving aside the shape, it feels like holding an ungripped shaft.ย  This lack of traction is countered by the shape, which fit comfortably into my grip, and the asymmetry locked it into place.ย  If you play in the rain or have sweaty hands, the slick texture may be a deal breaker for you.

Turning to the impact feel, the Macro Golf SquareStroke Shaft-Handle softens and “cleans up” the feeling of striking the golf ball.ย  This is in line with my experience with numerous other high end putter shafts.ย  The buzzy vibrations of mishits are removed, leaving a clear sense of where the ball struck the face.ย  I was able to test the SquareStroke Shaft-Handle with numerous putters, and I found that the SquareStroke made its mark on the feel while allowing the personality of the head to come through.

Performance

The Macro Golf SquareStroke Shaft-Handle was used as one of the constants in a recent Golf Myths Unplugged [read more HERE] which gave me extensive experience testing it with different putter heads.ย  It also gave me a chance to watch two dozen different players swing the SquareStroke and talk to them about their experiences.ย  All that to say, this may be the most exhaustive testing we’ve ever done for a review.

Let’s start with some of the basics.ย  The Shaft-Handle weighs 105 grams, which is very light.ย  Conventional steel putter shafts typically weigh around 130 grams and putter grips can weigh anywhere from 60 grams to over 100 grams.ย  Having so little weight in the shaft and grip creates higher swing weights, meaning the putter head feels relatively heavier.ย  This can translate to more feel for and control of the putter head.

In my opinion, and that of all the testers, the Macro Golf SquareStroke Shaft-Handle gave the putter head added emphasis without going too far.ย  It didn’t feel like swinging an anvil by a piece of dental floss.ย  There was a slightly boosted feel for the club head, but the hands still felt engaged.

For me, the biggest benefit of the Shaft-Handle is the shape of the grip.ย  Measuring from the target side to the trailing side, the handle is 1 10/16″ – very large.ย  Across the other dimension, it’s 15/16″ at its widest.ย  I noticed two benefits to this tapering, elliptical shape.ย  First, it allowed my hands to relax.ย  The shape filled my hand in a way that promoted a soft, tension-free grip.ย  Second, it muted unwanted wrist movement.ย  Most golfers are trying to minimize variables on the putting green, and the Shaft-Handle did that by keeping my wrists quiet throughout the stroke.

Across our test group, I got to see the Macro Golf SquareStroke Shaft-Handle work for a variety of hand placements or grip styles.ย  There are roughly sixteen inches of Handle before it tapers to just Shaft, making it very versatile.ย  Left hand low works very well as do all manner of Saw or Claw style grips.ย  The only style that I did not find comfortable was a matched or symmetrical grip.ย  While I’m not saying you can’t use that grip with the Shaft-Handle, but I think the asymmetrical shape is better suited to asymmetrical grips.

Finally, like many premium graphite putter shafts, the Macro Golf SquareStroke Shaft-Handle is very stiff.ย  The inventor states that there is “no shaft flex.”ย  This added stiffness helps to improve the performance on mishits, as the Shaft-Handle holds the head firm through impact. Conclusion

Virtually every new golf product claims to be innovative, but theย Macro Golf SquareStroke Shaft-Handle actually does break new ground.ย  By fashioning the shaft and grip from lightweight material, it puts more feel in the putter head, which can lead to superior distance control.ย  Paired with a novel grip shape that can help the hands to relax, the Shaft-Handle has the potential to transform your current putter into something entirely new.
