Jon Rahm Wins 2020 BMW Championship
Olympia Fields, IL – Jon Rahm won the 2020 BMW Championship in a playoff over Dustin Johnson after shooting a final round 64 to finish at -4 total. DJ made a double-breaking bomb of a putt on the 72nd hole to tie Rahm and force a playoff. Strangely, if Rahm had incurred a penalty by accidentally picking up his ball on the green without marking it on Saturday, he would not have needed a playoff at all.
Once the playoff commenced, Rahm was outside of DJ on the first green but rolled in a stunning long putt for birdie to put the pressure on Johnson. DJ hit a good putt but could not answer the call and Rahm celebrated his second win since the restart.
Regardless of the finish, Dustin Johnson retains the first place spot in the FedEx Cup and will begin next week’s tournament at -10. Rahm will begin the tournament in second place at -8 with Justin Thomas one stroke back of him at -7.
Rahm was 8 back after the first round and 6 strokes back after the second round, then caught fire on the weekend, shooting 66, 64. Similar to the firm and fast setup at the Memorial Tournament several weeks ago, Rahm’s overall play elevated him above most of the pack.
Joaquin Niemann and Hideki Matsuyama finished T3 at -2. Niemann will start in the group at -2 next week while Matsuyama will begin play at -4.
The tournament gave viewers an experience in stark contrast to the one they had last week where birdies were going in left and right and DJ won the Northern Trust shooting an incredible -30. Olympia Fields was set up more like a U.S. Open and par was at an absolute premium. In the end, only 5 players finished under par for the week. Ultimately, the tournament was an effective proving ground as the cream rose to the top, with the existing world numbers one and two finishing at the top of the pack.
With a field of 70 starting the tournament, only the top 30 in the FedEx Cup standings will move on to the final event of the season at East Lake in Atlanta next week.
