The Odyssey O-Works Red lineup introduces a new color scheme and a handful of different models like #7S to expand the O-Works lineup.
Introduction
In my original Odyssey O-Works review, I said that I thought Odyssey made their best insert yet. So far, I stand behind that statement, and I’m pleased to see Odyssey expand the lineup. This expansion consists of the O-Works Black and Red lines with a handful of different head models. The O-Works Red line consists of the 2-Ball, #7, and #7S head shapes. Our review was conducted primarily with the #7S pictured.
Looks
Though the original Odyssey O-Works lineup came out in Versa color schemes, the O-Works Red lineup is a straight red finish with a black sole. This red finish is a bold contrast and certainly makes a statement.
The #7S specifically has a slightly different look than #7 fans are familiar with. So far Odyssey has made the #7 with a double-bend shaft and a plumber’s neck. The use of a slant neck is a new addition and slightly reminiscent of another famous putter. This slant neck gives a different look at the #7 head while serving a functional purpose.
Sound & Feel
It goes without saying that the insert in a putter is going to greatly influence the sound and feel. Many anti-inserters complain that there isn’t enough response, and the sound is too puffy. I believe Odyssey tried to appease these people with the Metal-X inserts, which I found to be too clicky.
The O-Works insert has found the sweet spot I’m looking for. The new Microhinge insert is soft but has a touch more response and “tock” at impact than softer inserts. Aside from the insert in the White Damascus iX, the Microhinge is my favorite Odyssey insert to date.
Performance
There are different theories about how a ball is supposed to come off the putter face. Most companies are striving to get the ball rolling end-over-end as fast as possible. Odyssey‘s Microhinge face has little hinges on it that help the ball roll with immediate topspin.
My experience was that the ball started its roll almost immediately with the O-Works. I paid close attention looking for any really noticeable skid, but this was difficult to see. The only way I seemed to be able to create any skid was with a totally ridiculous putting stroke. A decently squared stroke resulted in a pure roll.
I mentioned earlier that the slant neck on the #7S served a more functional purpose. The #7 with the double bend shaft that we all know and love is face balanced and promotes a more “squared” stroke. Based on recent Tour feedback, Odyssey has found players are asking for more toe hang to promote more arc in the stroke. This slant neck gives the #7S more toe hang, therefore giving it more arc during the swing. The classic fanged head still maintains great balance and is easy to control.
Conclusion
Whether you’re looking for more feel in your insert or are just due for a refresh, the Odyssey O-Works putter is worth a look, and the new Red line may express your character a bit more. Soft feel with precise response and a pure roll should please any golfer out there. Odyssey’s Microhinge insert creates a middle ground for insert enthusiasts and milled-face players looking for change. For a company that has already set the insert bar, Odyssey continues to work to raise it higher.

I have just purchased the Odyssey Works 7s Putter and after your review I can’t wait to use it on the golf course tomorrow. It feels good in the hands and is well balanced in the putting stroke, it could be the answer to my putting problems. Another great product to add to the Odyssey range.
I bought the Odyssey O works, 7s putter. It was too light, I couldn’t feel the head.
I purchased the weight kit in order to make it heavier – but it is still not as balanced as my previous Odyssey 7 putter.
Any thoughts on how the O-Works line compares with the new EXO line?
Thanks.
Joe,
I’ll have a full review of the EXO line coming soon. Hard to compare to the O-Works because I didn’t use them much.
Best,
Matt
I purchased the 7s today and I love it. My home course has fast greens and my old Odyssey 2-Ball putter was way to heavy for fast greens.
unless shaft is leaning well forward micro hinge face launches ball in air even on short putts
I got is. it’s really more helpful for a golf game. i used this, super putters, thanks for this good share
I got here awesome idea about quality. thank for this great presentation
It’s really great place to collect golf resources. thanks
I’m looking to purchase a Odyssey O-Works 7s red putter.
John,
Plugged In Golf doesn’t sell clubs, but you can buy direct through Odyssey in the link in the review or you can purchase one through Club Champion or any other Odyssey retailer.
Best,
Matt
The O-works 7S is my current putter and I do like the weight and feel of it. I’m considering getting the Scotty Cameron Special Select Squareback2 as an additional putter. to alternate in when I lose the feel of the mallet. How would having these two putter options work for me. Note: My previous putter to the Odyssey was an old school (1980’s era) Ping Answer 2. I liked it but it had zero technology so I went to the mallet. Any thoughts?
John,
I think it’s fine to have a rotation of putters. If you like the Squareback 2, go for it.

What is the weight of the 7s head? Can it be made heavier? I’ve heard that there is a kit that you can get but how might this create other changes that you don’t want? Can you create a counter-balance feel similar to the Tank #7? Thanks
