Scottie Scheffler Dominates In 2025 Open Championship Victory
Portrush, Northern Ireland – Scottie Scheffler (-17) cruised en route to a four shot victory at the 2025 Open Championship at Royal Portrush. Many have described him and his game as “inevitable” and indeed this week the possibility of anyone else lifting the Claret Jug began to feel very remote beginning on Friday evening. Scheffler is clearly the best player in the world and now the owner of four major championships and 3 of 4 legs of the grand slam.
Harris English finished in solo second at -13. Chris Gotterup finished one back of him in solo third at -12, continuing his excellent form after last week’s big win at the Scottish Open. Both players now have to be considered strong options for captain Keegan Bradley for Bethpage Black this fall. Wyndham Clark is another American who had a strong finish that will help his Ryder Cup chances after opening with 76 and then going 66-66-65 to finish T4 at -11 alongside Haotong Li and Matt Fitzpatrick.
Rory McIlroy was one of the most watched and talked about players of the week, understandably. Hailing from Northern Ireland and owning the course record at Royal Portrush after shooting 61 as a 16-year-old, McIlroy’s last experience playing the Open at this course in 2019 was bitterly disappointing and after finding some of his best form this season, many had high hopes for his chances this week. He played well but couldn’t go low enough to climb the board and be in position to threaten the lead. He finished T7 at -10 alongside last year’s Champion Golfer of the Year, Xander Schauffele, as well as Robert MacIntyre.
Bryson DeChambeau is another big name who had a notable week, opening with a disappointing 78 then shooting 65-68-64 to climb the leaderboard and finish T10 at -9 alongside Corey Conners, Russell Henley, and 2023 Open Champion Brian Harman. Bryson’s game is clearly not best suited for links golf but he’s shown his ability to grow and adapt and he may well hoist a Claret Jug before his career is over.
Next week, the PGA Tour heads to the Twin Cities for the 3M Open. The field is one of the strongest in the tournament’s history as players look to gain as many points as possible before the playoffs begin. The field includes the likes of Sam Burns, Wyndham Clark, Tony Finau, Max Homa, and Sungjae Im.
