2021 CJ Cup @ Summit Recap

Rory McIlroy Wins CJ Cup @ Summit

Las Vegas, NV – Rory McIlroy (-25) won the 2021 CJ Cup @ Summit.  McIlroy edged out Collin Morikawa by one stroke.  With the win, McIlroy became the 20th player to win 20 times on the PGA Tour, joining an elite group to achieve that feat before age 35.

McIlroy was not the only one to go low on Sunday.  Morikawa, who is a member at Summit, took it deep with a -10 62 to vault himself up the leaderboard and claim solo second.  Talor Gooch also carded a 62, holing out for eagle on the last from just inside of 100 yards. Still in search of his first win, he earned a solid T5 finish.

One of the biggest stories of the week was Rickie Fowler.  Getting into the field on a sponsor’s exemption, Fowler made good use of the opportunity.  After carding rounds of 66, 66, and 63, he was the 54-hole leader, two strokes ahead of McIlroy.  He couldn’t keep the mojo working quite as well Sunday though. He shot a -1 71 to finish T3.

Other notable performances included Keith Mitchell (T3, -22), who looked in total control of his ball for most of the week and seems a good bet to get back in the winners’ circle soon; Sam Burns (T5, -21) whose hot start to the season looks set to continue; and Sungjae Im (T9, -20) whose good form continues after his win last week at the Shriners.

Typically held at the spectacular Nine Bridges on Jeju Island in South Korea, this is the second year that the event has been held in the states due to COVID.  The limited field no cut event attracted many of the game’s biggest names and introduced American fans to some of Asia’s top players.

Next week, the PGA Tour heads to Japan for the Zozo Championship at Accordia Golf Narashino CC.  Patrick Cantlay will defend his title against a field that includes Hideki Matsuyama, Xander Schauffele, Collin Morikawa, and Will Zalatoris.
