The 2023 Genesis Scottish Open Recap

North Berwick, Scotland – Rory McIlroy has won the 2023 Genesis Scottish Open. With a score of 15-under par, he secured his 24th PGA Tour win, and his first-ever win in Scotland. Along with the title and trophy, he also earned $1,575,000 in prize money.

It was a true Scottish golfing experience as the tournament concluded on Sunday as the winds whipped between 30-40 miles an hour at times. McIlroy kept his composure down the stretch though, and despite backing away from his shots a number of times, finished with a score of 68 to secure the title. His hot putter included birdies on 17, and another on what was the single hardest hole on Tour last year, the 18th.

For McIlroy, this has been a stellar year in a stellar career. A career that is absolutely abundant in different countries’ open victories. Along with this Scottish Open title, he also has earned open champion victories at the British Open, the U.S. Open, the Irish Open, the Canadian Open, the Australian Open, and the Hong Kong Open. This marks his second PGA Tour win this season.

The field McIlroy bested was strong this week, as many of the top PGA tour and DP World Tour players were in attendance. World number 1 Scottie Scheffler was a threat to win this week and ultimately finished in a tie for third with a score of 10-under par. That marks his 18th consecutive top-12 finish. Other notables included a bunch of popular players all tied for sixth place that included Tyrell Hatton, Tom Kim, Tommy Fleetwood, and J.T. Poston with scores of 9-under par.

Although to the locals, the biggest story had to be the Scottish native Robert MacIntyre. He put on a valiant effort on the final day, carding a 64 and finishing in second place. While he didn’t win, he nearly became just the second Scottish national to win the Scottish Open.

McIlroy will undoubtedly hope to use this win as a springboard into next week’s 151st Open Championship at Royal Liverpool. If he manages to pull off that win in England, it would mark his 5th PGA Tour major win, and second Open Championship win. There, he will be facing off against the best players in the world, including Scheffler and Jon Rahm.
