2024 Zurich Classic of New Orleans Recap

Rory McIlroy and Shane Lowry Claim Victory in New Orleans

Rory McIlroy and Shane Lowry (-25) won the 2024 Zurich Classic of New Orleans.  The duo were among the favorites for the week and ended up earning a unique victory as a team after beating Chad Ramey and Martin Trainer in a playoff.

Trainer and Ramey weren’t able to make par on the first playoff hole, a par 5.  To their credit, they vaulted themselves up the leaderboard on Sunday after shooting a blistering 63 in alt shot format.  The second place finish will undoubtedly do wonders for their FedEx Cup rankings.

Finishing behind Trainer and Ramey were Ryan Brehm and Mark Hubbard at -24.  Four teams tied for fourth one shot behind Hubbard and Brehm: Garrick Higgo and Ryan Fox, Sam Stevens and Paul Barjon, Zac Blair and Patrick Fishburn, and Nico Echavarria and Max Greyserman.

The Zurich Classic is the PGA Tour’s only event with a team format.  Players pair up with their best friends or often relative strangers in an attempt to take it deep over the course of four rounds.  The first and third rounds are four ball (alt shot) and the second and fourth rounds are foursomes (better ball).

While the leaderboard wasn’t exactly stacked with household names, it’s a reminder that PGA Tour players are the best in the world at what they do and anyone is capable of winning given the right circumstances.

Unfortunately, some of the more notable teams in the field failed to impress.  Among those who missed the cut were Sahith Theegala and Will Zalatoris, Nicolai and Rasmus Hojgaard, and Tom Hoge and Maverick McNealy.

Perhaps the most notable duo, best friends Xander Schauffele and Patrick Cantlay finished an underwhelming T23 at -18.  Collin Morikawa and Kurt Kitayama also earned a share of 23rd place.

Next week, the PGA Tour heads to Texas and TPC Craig Ranch for the CJ CUP Byron Nelson.  Jason Day won last year’s iteration and will defend against a field that includes Jordan Spieth, Will Zalatoris, Sungjae Im, and Min Woo Lee.
