Scottsdale, Arizona – Nick Taylor emerges victorious after battling Charley Hoffman in a playoff to become the 2024 Waste Management Phoenix Open Champion.
The Waste Management is always played in Arizona at TPC Scottsdale in February to avoid the cold winter weather that most of the country is experiencing this time of year. Well, this week, the cold, wet winter weather descended upon Scottsdale and not only soaked the course, but created multiple delays. The rain forced the first round into Friday, while more bad weather pushed the second round into Saturday morning. Darkness stopped play and delayed the third round into Sunday.
Despite the poor weather, the leaderboard was covered in big names. Scottie Scheffler held the lead a few times over the week but ultimately finished in a tie for third with Sam Burns. Burns also had a good week, even making an eagle on the par 5 13th hole in his final round push to the finish. Fan favorites Jordan Spieth and Justin Thomas both had solid weeks in the desert finishing tied for 6th and tied for 12th, respectively.
However, the tournament all came down to a two man race as the sun set on Super Bowl Sunday. The first of which was Charley Hoffman who came out on Sunday and made 11 birdies and an eagle in his final 24 holes. As good as Charley was, his stellar play was only good enough for a tie with fellow playoff mate Nick Taylor.
Taylor made three birdies in his final four holes to get into the playoff, the last of which was a putt that barely dropped in the side door on the 18th green. Nick’s clutch putts continued on 18 as he drained not one, but two birdies on 18 in back to back playoff holes to secure the victory and beat Hoffman for the win.
This is Nick Taylor’s fourth PGA Tour victory and second in just seven months. Next week, the PGA Tour heads to LA for The Genesis Invitational.
