Lucas Glover Wins First Event of the 2023 FedEx Cup Playoffs
Memphis, TN – Lucas Glover (-15) fought through the heat and the other 69 best golfers of this season on the PGA Tour to win the first leg of the FedEx Cup playoffs. Glover beat Patrick Cantlay in a playoff. Cantlay shot a final round 64 to vault himself up the leaderboard but unfortunately hit his tee shot in the water on the first playoff hole and could not get up and down for par to match Glover.
Glover has been on a heater lately, racking up high finishes and winning last week after he recently switched to the long putter. Golf fans are finally witnessing what happens when his ability to hole putts is on the same level as his ball-striking. It’s scary to think about what might have been for the 43-year-old 2009 US Open champion had he made the move sooner.
Glover and Cantlay finished 1 stroke ahead of Rory McIlroy and Tommy Fleetwood in T3. Fleetwood gets another high finish but still hasn’t won on the PGA Tour, while McIlroy is in great shape to contend for yet another FedEx Cup title, it would be his fourth. Taylor Moore finished in solo fifth at -12 and edged out a group of seven players at -11 that included Jordan Spieth, Max Homa, Sungjae Im, Cam Davis, Adam Schenk, Corey Conners, and Russell Henley
Notable players to miss out on making next week (top 50) include Mackenzie Hughes (51), Nick Hardy (52), Taylor Montgomery (53), and Keith Mitchell (64).
Some notable names to sneak in on the right side of that line were Cam Davis (T6, -11), who started 62 and moved up to 45; Hideki Matsuyama (T16, -9) who moved from 57 to 47; and Tom Hoge, who birdied his last three holes of the tournament to sneak in at 48.
In addition to a high finish and great payday this week, this week’s top finishers also set themselves up well heading into next week. The BMW Championship is the second leg of the FedEx Cup playoffs and will be held at Olympia Fields outside of Chicago.
