2022 World Wide Technology Championship at Mayakoba Recap

Russell Henley Wins in Mayakoba

Riviera Maya, MX – Russell Henley (-23) won the 2022 World Wide Technology Championship at Mayakoba.  It was his first win on tour since 2017, despite regular high finishes.  Henley, who is known for his elite ball-striking, was too good to be caught this week.  He started the final round with a six stroke lead and never looked like giving it up.

He beat out Brian Harman by four strokes.  Harman was consistent throughout the week, shooting three rounds of 66 along with a 67.  Finishing one stroke behind Harman in T3 was a group of five players: Scottie Scheffler, Joel Dahmen, Troy Merritt, Seamus Power, and Will Gordon.  Power continued his hot form after last week’s win in Bermuda while Scheffler looks set to recapture his elite mojo of last season.

Viktor Hovland fell short in his attempt to three-peat at this event.  He finished T10 at -16.  Other notable finishes included Maverick McNealy (T10); Taylor Montgomery, who has been racking up the strong finishes (also T10); Sam Ryder (T8, -17), whose third round 73 probably cost him a shot at challenging Henley; and Patton Kizzire, who started the day as Henley’s closest chaser but shot 71 and slid to T10.

Next week, the PGA Tour heads back stateside for the Cadence Bank Houston Open.  Carlos Ortiz is the defending champion but won’t be present to defend.  Some of the notables in the field include Sam Burns, Tony Finau, Hideki Matsuyama, and Scottie Scheffler.
