Detroit, MI – For his second consecutive victory, Tony Finau is the 2022 Rocket Mortgage Classic champion. Record low scores resulted after ideal scoring conditions appeared all week in Michigan. Eventual champion Tony Finau needed scores of 64, 66, 65, and 67 to win by five at 26-under par.
Heading into the final round, Tony Finau and Canadian Taylor Pendrith found themselves tied at the top of the leaderboard. They were closely followed by several big names including Cameron Young and Patrick Cantlay. The low round of the day went to Joohyung Kim who shot a 9-under par and good enough to jump into sole possession of 7th place.
Low scores also demonstrate the importance of hitting it close and dropping lots of putts. Unfortunately for the 54-hole co-leader Taylor Pendrith, he wasn’t able to make enough putts and ended with a final round at even par. Taylor birdied only three holes while also bogeying three holes dropping him into a tie for second. Cantlay and Young both had solid rounds of 66 & 68, respectively, but it wasn’t enough to catch a red hot Finau.
This is Tony Finau’s fifth professional victory and third in less than a year. Next week, the PGA Tour heads to North Carolina for the Wyndham Championship. This is last and final tournament before the FedEx Cup playoffs begin.
