2022 RBC Canadian Open Recap

Rory McIlroy Wins In Lead Up to US Open

Toronto, ON – Rory McIlroy (-19) won the 2022 RBC Canadian Open.  And he had to go low to do it, shooting a final round 62 to edge Tony Finau by two strokes.  Finau himself shot a 62 on Saturday and was tied for the lead with McIlroy heading into the final round.  The duel that ensued was fantastic entertainment, with McIlroy making birdie on 17 and 18.  Finau’s final round 64, though excellent, wasn’t good enough.

Finishing two behind Finau was Justin Thomas, whose strong form continues heading into another major week.  Another player who has been on fire as of late is Sam Burns.  Burns, fresh off his third victory of the season, shot all 4 rounds in the 60s and finished T4 at -14.

Justin Rose also finished T4 and was on the brink of history.  He was -11 through 15 holes and staring 59 in the face on this par 70 golf course.  Unfortunately, two late bogeys meant that he would fall one shot short.  Still, his final round 60 featured some exceptional golf and is something to remember.

Others who had notable weeks included Wyndham Clark and Keith Mitchell, who both punched their tickets to the Open Championship with their T7 finishes.

Part of the story this week, of course, was about the players who weren’t there.  Some big names, including former RBC ambassadors Dustin Johnson and Graeme McDowell took part in the inaugural LIV Golf Invitational event in London.  While not the strongest field, more names, such as Patrick Reed and Bryson DeChambeau have now committed to join going forward.  Meanwhile, PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan issued a strong condemnation of the upstart league and notified those who join it that they will be suspended from the PGA Tour.

Next week, the golf world trains its eyes on Brookline, Mass for the US Open at the Country Club.  The historic venue hasn’t hosted a major in some time and it should be an absolute delight for golf fans around the world.  The betting favorites include Scottie Scheffler, Justin Thomas, Rory McIlroy, and Jon Rahm.
