2021 The American Express Recap

Si Woo Kim Earns Third Career Tour Victory

Palm Springs, CA – Si Woo Kim (-23) shot a final round 64 to win the 2021 American Express.  It was his third career PGA Tour victory.  After winning the 2017 Players Championship at age 21, becoming the youngest ever to win that event, many expected Kim to become one of golf’s next big things.  However, he has struggled in recent years.  With this performance, he may have reminded the golfing public of his prodigious talent.

Kim had to play lights out during the final round to stay ahead of Patrick Cantlay (-22), who shot a blazing final round 61.  Cantlay posted the early clubhouse lead after coming into the day four strokes back of 54-hole leaders Kim, Max Homa, and Tony Finau.  Cantlay made the cut on the number and ended up shooting 65-61 on the weekend to vault up the leaderboard.  He lost out to Kim by one stroke.

The up-and-coming Aussie Cameron Davis (-20) finished in solo third, notching his best career finish on the PGA Tour to date.  Tony Finau (-19) ended in solo fourth after struggling to get going with his putter and making a few crucial errors down the stretch.

Other players who had notable performances included Abraham Ancer, Michael Thompson, and Doug Ghim, who all ended up T5 at -15; Francesco Molinari (T8, -14), who carded his first top 10 in recent memory; and Chris Kirk (T16, -12) who finished up his incredibly clutch performance to regain full status last week.

Next week, the PGA Tour heads to Torrey Pines for the Farmers Insurance Open.  Marc Leishman is the defending champion there and will defend his title against a field that includes the likes of Brooks Koepka, Sungjae Im, Rory McIlroy, and Jon Rahm.
