Colin Morikawa Tops JT in a Playoff
Dublin, OH – Colin Morikawa (-19) won his second career event on the PGA Tour Sunday, beating Justin Thomas in a playoff. Morikawa’s young career is off to an impressive start. Having made an impressive 22 of his first 22 cuts, his streak came to an end last week in Detroit. This week, he rebounded in a big way by taking down one of the game’s established elite players, after shooting a final round 66 to Thomas’ 69.
In addition to his remarkable ball striking, Morikawa also silenced doubters of his putting ability on several notable occasions, not the least of which on the first playoff hole when he dropped a 24-foot birdie putt right on top of Thomas, who had just emphatically holed a bomb of his own.
The event is an irregular tour stop and was added after several others were scrapped from the schedule amid the uncertainties caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. It was the first of two weeks in a row where the tour will play the same course, certainly a first on tour. It will be interesting for fans to see how much the setup changes from week to week.
Other players who had notable performances included Viktor Hovland, who showed that another win might not be far off in his young career, finishing solo third at -15; Chase Seiffert, who finished one stroke behind Hovland in solo fourth and made his best finish since graduating the Korn Ferry Tour in 2019; and Patrick Cantlay, who shot a final round 65 to vault himself into T7 position and show that he is looking to defend his title next week.
Next week, the PGA Tour remains at Jack’s Place and will play the Memorial Tournament at Muirfield Village. Patrick Cantlay is the defending champion and will be joined by a field that includes Tiger Woods, Dustin Johnson, Brooks Koepka, Rory McIlroy, Jon Rahm, Morikawa, and Thomas.
