The 2025 CJ Cup Byron Nelson Tournament Recap

McKinney, Texas – Scottie Scheffler runs away from the field with his 14th PGA Tour win for a shocking eight stroke victory.  Scottie managed to lap the field to notable players like Erik Van Rooyen and Jordan Spieth to capture his first victory of 2025.

The host club for the CJ Cup Byron Nelson is TPC Craig Ranch, which is just 30 minutes North of Dallas.  While most would agree it isn’t an easy course, it yields a ton of birdie opportunities to the professionals.  This year’s cut line was at five under par, which is one of the lowest cut lines this year.  Among those who made the cut were Americans Matt Kuchar, Webb Simpson, and Patton Kizzire.  All three finished outside the top 40 but still managed to take home a check.

Georgia Tech product Vince Whaley fired four consecutive rounds in the 60s to notch a top 15 finish while tying with Stanford grad Patrick Rodgers who also carded four rounds in the 60s.  Another notable was Jordan Spieth who actually wasn’t that relevant in this tournament until he back doored a fourth place finish after firing a final round 62.

Ultimately this was always going to be Scottie’s tournament to lose.  His opening two rounds of 61 and 63 were both the lowest in the field and propelled him to a multi-shot lead before even getting to the weekend.  His Saturday round of 66 wasn’t the low of the day but his closest competitor in Rooyen was still behind him by eight strokes.  After going out in a six under 30 in his final round, they could have handed Scottie the trophy right then.  He made three more birdies on the back nine to just one bogey to secure the win in record fashion.  This is only Scotties second win in his home state of Texas but takes home a whopping $1.78 million in prize money.

Next week, the PGA Tour heads to Philadelphia Cricket Club for the Truist Championship.
