Blain, Minnesota – Jhonattan Vegas emerges as the 2024 3M Open winner after surviving a crowded leaderboard with a birdie at the 72nd hole. This is his fourth PGA Tour win and first victory at the 3M Open.
Another week at a TPC course that gets ripped up by the pros at TPC Twin Cities in Minnesota. The course has some teeth on a few holes but there are lots of birdie and eagle opportunities. Some took full advantage early on like Canadien golfer Mackenzie Hughes and Clemson product Jacob Bridgeman who both shot 64 and 63, respectively in round one. Despite following it up with two decent below par rounds on Friday and Saturday, Hughes fell behind the leaders and finished in a tie for 19th while Jacob also suffered the same fate.
Round two had low scores of 64 shot by Doug Ghim, Matt NeSmith and Taylor Pendrith. Both Matt and Doug also carded rounds in the 70s which pushed them off the first page of the leaderboard while the 33 year old Canadien Taylor Pendrith took advantage and found himself in one of the final groups on Sunday. His final round of 67 with a birdie at the last pushed him into a solo fifth finish.
Long time PGA Tour member Matt Kuchar gave himself an opportunity to win for the first time in almost four years. His last victory coming in 2020. Matt’s final round of 71 fell two shots short of the leader and playing partner in Vegas.
Max Greyserman made headlines in the final round as he gave Vegas the biggest challenge. Max came from behind, carding one of only two final round 63s to vault him into a tie for first place. The other was Cam Champ but Cam was too far back to catch the leaders. Max on the other hand, had finished his round well before the leaders and had to watch the final round for over an hour before they came up to the final hole. Max kept himself busy playing ping pong in the clubhouse but ultimately watched Vegas make birdie at his 72nd hole to drop Max into a solo second finish.
Jhonattan Vegas didn’t have the lowest round of the day but he certainly didn’t need it. In fact, retrospectively, he only needed a one under round to win but it wasn’t easy. Vegas carded four birdies to just three bogeys. The final birdie coming in the form of a very long two putt on the 72nd hole.
This is Jhonattan’s first victory in over seven years and fourth win on the PGA Tour. Next week, the PGA Tour is off for the Olympics but returns for the Wyndham Championship the week after.
