Houston, Texas – Jason Kokrak picked up his third PGA Tour victory as the 2021 Hewlett Packard Enterprise Houston Open winner. Jason was an unlikely winner this week as hasn’t had a top-10 finish since his last win back in May. Jason, who admitted to needing an emergency coaching session earlier this week in Houston, birdied four of his final six holes Sunday to jump the congested leaderboard and overtake the lead which would he would ultimately hold on to till the end.
The PGA Tour’s wrap around schedule makes it tough for the biggest names in golf to play in every event. However, the competition is no less difficult. 54-hole leader Scottie Sheffler, who is still looking for his first PGA Tour victory, started slow on Thursday but shot a 62 followed by a pair of 69’s to finish in a tie for 2nd with Kevin Tway. Tway is son of 1986 Major Champion Bob Tway and had Kevin not shot a 3-over par on Saturday, might have been able to pull out the victory on Sunday. Mathew Wolff also made headlines this week. After he dropped out of contention early Sunday, he managed to make an ace on the par-3 9th hole which unfortunately would be his only highlight in his final round. Two-time winner in 2021, Cameron Smith finished in a tie for 15th.
Jason Kokrak had an interesting week. The weather delay pushed the end of his 2nd round into Saturday morning where he posted a back nine 41. He didn’t let it get to him though. Jason got the train back on the tracks later that afternoon and managed a 4-under 66 to get right back in the mix. He was 2 back going into the final round. His front nine on Sunday started well with back-to-back birdies on the par-5 3rd and the par-4 4th. Jason gave one back with a bogey at the 6th before making par at the next 6 holes. Then it happened and Kokrak went off with 4 birdies in a row, jumping a slew of players in the process. Jason wouldn’t relinquish the lead from there and is now the 2021 Hewlett Packard Enterprise Houston Open.
Next week, the PGA Tour heads to Georgia for the RSM Classic.
