Breakthrough Golf Stability Carbon Pro Putter Shaft Review

50 Words or Less

The Breakthrough Golf Stability Carbon Pro putter shaft has a toned down look and sublime feel.  Offers the rock-solid performance we’ve come to expect from BGT, minimizing the effect of mishits and maximizing consistency.

Introduction

After doing much of the heavy lifting to launch the premium putter shaft category, Breakthrough Golf Technology has spent the last couple years exploring other segments.  They’ve broken into wood shafts with the lightweight Brava [review HERE], and they’ve essentially created the high end wedge shaft market with the RedZNE [review HERE].  This year, BGT also unveiled their first putter, the Paradox [review HERE].

Despite all this exploration and innovation, BGT has not taken their eye off the category where they got started.  The new Breakthrough Golf Stability Carbon Pro is a “complete re-engineering” of their popular Stability Carbon shaft.  Having gamed several Breakthrough Golf Technology putter shafts in the last few years, I was excited to see what the new Carbon Pro could do.

Looks

The look of the Breakthrough Golf Stability Carbon Pro is ideal for the player who wants to stand out just a little.  Gone is the visible carbon fiber from the original Stability Carbon [review HERE], replaced with a solid matte black finish.  There is substantial branding – a giant “Carbon” leading to a smaller “Pro” and “BGT Stability” – but you can get a totally clean address look with a “logo down” installation.

Players have the option of a black or chrome “tip” on the Stability Carbon Pro.  I opted for black to maintain the monochromatic look with my black oxide Byron Morgan putter.  The Carbon Pro has a non-tapered profile, so there is a larger transition from the graphite portion to the tip, but the all-black look kept this from being a distraction at address.

Sound & Feel

Every seasoned golfer can recall times when they went back to an old piece of equipment and thought, “Why did I ever move away from this?”  That’s exactly the experience I had putting with the Breakthrough Golf Stability Carbon Pro.  The feel was sensational – soft, pure, connected – and I wondered why I had switched away from BGT and a traditional blade.

The Breakthrough Golf Stability Carbon Pro is rated as “Ultra Stiff” just like the other two BGT putter shafts, but it doesn’t feel like it.  Everything from takeaway through impact is smooth and effortless.  You won’t feel the shaft flexing like some softer graphite putter shafts – this is a Stability shaft, after all – but there’s nothing remotely harsh about it.

Finally, as I’ve noted about many other graphite putter shafts, the feel of impact is extremely clean.  I could locate impact with precision, but there were no unwanted vibrations from off-center hits.  It’s truly a case of “everything you want, nothing you don’t.”

Performance

Though you would never know it from the feel, the Breakthrough Golf Stability Carbon Pro putter shaft is substantially stiffer than its predecessor.  Per BGT, there’s a 10% increase in bending stiffness with a focus on additional stiffness at the connector.  This, along with 35% more high-modulus carbon fiber and virtually zero torque make the Stability Carbon Pro 10% more consistent than the original Stability Carbon.  This represents improvements in speed, line, and impact location.

I want to take a moment here to note two important things.  First, a 10% improvement is extremely impressive – hats off to BGT.  The second is that changing your putter shaft is not like changing your driver shaft.  You aren’t going to see a day-and-night difference.  If you’re able to do a head-to-head comparison, as I have, you will see improvements with a premium shaft, but mishit putts aren’t magically going to veer into the hole.  Upgrading your putter shaft is about inches of improvement that can, over time, shave strokes off your handicap.

Getting back to the shaft in question, another change is the balance point.  The Breakthrough Golf Stability Carbon Pro should come in 3-4 swing weight points lighter than the original, making it more similar to traditional steel shafts.  This should allow for a seamless transition from steel.

Finally, I’d like to offer a couple notes on the three putter shafts in Breakthrough Golf’s lineup and how to choose between them.  All three shafts are “Ultra Stiff” with one degree of torque and a butt diameter of 0.600″.  The Breakthrough Golf Stability Carbon Pro weighs in at 120 grams, which is the heaviest of the three.  The Stability Tour is just 105 grams, and the Stability One Tour is 115.  Both the Stability Tour [review HERE] and the Stability Carbon Pro can fit any putter thanks to their connector.  In contrast, the Stability One Tour [review HERE] has a one-piece construction and only its “L-neck” or plumbers neck putters.

Conclusion

The Breakthrough Golf Stability Carbon Pro putter shaft is a piece of equipment that rejects the idea of compromise.  It performs as well as any premium putter shaft, and it delivers superb feel.  Whether you play for the art and feel of a perfectly struck shot or the satisfaction of writing down the lowest numbers possible, it’s worth considering this as an upgrade for your flatstick.

  1. Great review, Matt. I’ve been considering one of these shafts for years. When you say they will fit any putter does that include Ping PLD? I know at one time Ping had a proprietary way of shafting their putters.

      Michael,

      Thank you.
To my knowledge, yes. The PLD putters that I’ve seen appear to have pretty conventional necks, though it’s entirely possible there’s something I’m not aware of.

      Best,

      Matt
