Brian Campbell Wins 2024 Mexico Open
Nuevo Vallarta, MX – Brian Campbell (-20) won the 2024 Mexico Open at VidantaWorld, beating Aldrich Potgieter on the second playoff hole. It was the 31-year-old’s career victory on the PGA Tour after graduating from the Korn Ferry Tour last year. Campbell received the break of a lifetime after his errant tee shot ricocheted back into play.
Finishing behind them in solo third was Isaiah Salinda at -19 and Aaron Rai and Ben Griffin one shot back of him at -18.
Potgieter entered the final round one stroke ahead of Campbell and three clear of Stephan Jaeger. Luckily for the rest of the field, neither Potgieter or Campbell were able to run away and hide and luckily for viewers, it was a close contest until the very end.
Potgieter was able to use his prodigious length to his advantage. The rookie is the PGA Tour leader in driving distance thus far in 2025, and among the worst in driving accuracy. This week, he was able to keep it in play and putt well enough to lead most of the way. After a top 15 finish at Torrey Pines a few weeks back, he appears to be a player to watch going forward.
The contrast between Potgieter and Campbell’s games was stark, with the 20-year-old South African routinely 30+ yards past Campbell off the tee. Yet, Campbell was rock solid and deadly accurate, ultimately equal to and just a touch better overall at the end of the day.
Salinda cashed a clutch birdie putt on 18 to get himself to -19, putting the finishing touches on a round of 65 that highlights the former Stanford standout’s potential as a pro. Unfortunately it was not quite enough as both Campbell and Potgieter got up and down for birdies to get to -20 on 18.
While the field was completely devoid of the game’s biggest stars, it didn’t lack intrigue as young players and stalwarts alike jockeyed for position until the very end. While not among the most prestigious events on the PGA Tour calendar, there was plenty on the line for players looking to cement their status and improve their stock the rest of the way.
The golf course provided a good test. As a resort course, it is one of the most forgiving driving courses a PGA Tour player will ever see, it had plenty of interest around the greens. The tournament certainly benefits from the fact that its penultimate hole is a long par 3 over water and its final hole is a reachable par 5, yielding challenging shots and the opportunities for big swings to occur.
Other players who had notable performances included two amateurs, US Amateur champion Jose Luis Ballester, who vaulted himself up the leaderboard to a T17 finish with a final round 65, and Cayman Islands native Justin Hastings (T13, -13); Joel Dahmen and Stephan Jaeger finished T6 at -17.
Some of the field’s more notable players, however, failed to make the cut, including Sam Stevens, Kurt Kitayama, Michael Thorbjornsen, and Beau Hossler.
Next week, the PGA Tour heads to Florida and PGA National for the Cognizant Classic in the Palm Beaches. Austin Eckroat is the defending champion and will attempt to defend his title against a field that includes Daniel Berger, Luke Clanton, Rickie Fowler, Sungjae Im, and Shane Lowry.
