2023 Mexico Open Recap

Tony Finau Earns Second Win of 2023

Puerto Vallarta, MX – Tony Finau (-24) was lights out all week on his way to victory at the 2023 Mexico Open.  His final round 66 was his worst score of the week en route to a consummate victory over world number one Jon Rahm as well as a host of other chasers.  It was Finau’s sixth career PGA Tour win and fourth in the last two years.

Despite not having one of the stronger fields of the year, Finau still had to contend with Rahm, who brought his A game.  Rahm ended up three shots behind when the dust cleared, comfortably in solo second ahead of last year’s runner up Brandon Wu at -19.

Finishing behind Wu in solo fourth was Akshay Bhatia, at -18.  Bhatia is one of golf’s most exciting young players.  One of the rare talents who notably chose to forgo college in favor of turning pro at age 17, Bhatia has had his share of ups and downs on the Korn Ferry Tour.  Recently, he’s started to show the consistency to go with his prodigious talent that will likely make him a PGA Tour winner sooner than later.

Other players who had notable finishes included Eric Cole (T5, -16), who continues his high level of play after narrowly losing out to Chris Kirk at the Honda; Cameron Champ (T8, -14), who popped up on the leaderboard for one of the first times in recent memory, taking advantage of his distance and the golf course’s wide playing corridors; and Jimmy Walker (T15, -12), who continued his own career renaissance.

Next week, the PGA Tour heads to Charlotte and Quail Hollow Golf Club for the Wells Fargo Championship.  The tournament has been named one of the PGA Tour’s new Designated Events, which means the field is stacked and the purse is massive.  Among the favorites in the field will be Rory McIlroy, Viktor Hovland, Collin Morikawa, Jordan Spieth, and Justin Thomas.
