2022 The Players Championship Recap

Ponte Vedra Beach, FL — After numerous delays due to unprecedented wind and rain, Cameron Smith has won The Players Championship, shooting a score of 13-under-par.  He becomes the 5th Australian to claim the title, joining the likes of Jason Day and Greg Norman.  In doing so, he’s won what is the largest winner’s prize in PGA Tour history, $3.6 million.  This win is also the 5th PGA Tour title Smith has claimed.

Despite ridiculously difficult conditions throughout the week, Smith kept the pedal to the metal, in particular, with his putter.  Utilizing his flat stick better than anyone has in the history of the event, he had 42 one-putts for the tournament and only needed 101 putts through 72 holes.  Both of those figures are the best putting stats ever achieved by a winner at The Players.

In the end, the only player that had a shot to beat Smith was Anirban Lahiri, who would have been only the second PGA Tour winner from India.  Unfortunately for him, he narrowly missed chipping in to tie Smith and go to a playoff.  Still, a solo second-place finish at 12-under earned him $2.18 million.  Other notables included Paul Casey, Kevin Kisner, and Keegan Bradley who finished third, fourth, and fifth respectively at 11, 10, and 9-under par.

The next stop on the PGA Tour train is Palm Harbor Florida.  The event is the Valspar Championship and Sam Burns, who narrowly missed out on a top-25 finish this week, will look to defend his title from last season.
