2019 Houston Open Recap

Lanto Griffin Earns First PGA Tour Win at Houston Open

Humble, TX – Lanto Griffin (-14) earned the first victory of his PGA Tour career at the 2019 Houston Open.  After entering the final round in first place one stroke ahead of Mark Hubbard, Griffin kept up his solid play and kept his nerve down the stretch to shoot 69 and maintain his one shot lead on Hubbard, who finished T-2 with fellow Korn Ferry Tour graduate Scott Harrington.

The final round turned into a bit of a match play situation as the final pairing of Griffin and Hubbard went blow for blow and continued to stay just ahead of a pack that included Harrington as well as Xinjun Zhang and Harris English, who both fired rounds of 66 and finished T4 at -11.  Also finishing in a tie for fourth were Talor Gooch, Sepp Straka, and Carlos Ortiz.

Despite lacking in star power typically found on the PGA Tour, the field produced its fair share of excellent golf, at times dealing with difficult weather conditions throughout the week.  Four players finished T9 (-10) one stroke back of the pack at T4 and four players finished T13 at -9.

There were several other new faces who put forth notable performances this week, including 2017 U.S. Amateur champion Doc Redman (T13, -9),  low amateur at the 2019 U.S. Open Brandon Wu (T17, -8) who was competing in his first PGA Tour event as a pro, and recently crowned Korn Ferry Tour Player of the Year Scottie Scheffler (T28, -5).

Next week, the PGA Tour heads to Jeju Island, South Korea for the CJ Cup at Nine Bridges.  Brooks Koepka ran away with the tournament last year, shooting -21. He will be joined in the field by many of the world’s best, including Justin Thomas, Jordan Spieth, Hideki Matsuyama, Matthew Wolff, and Viktor Hovland.
