Jason Day Back in the Winner’s Circle

Charlotte, NC- Jason Day has won the 2018 Wells Fargo Championship. This is Dayโ€™s 12th win on the PGA Tour and his second victory in 2018. Day played the lead role in the exciting finish at Quail Hollow as he put on a driving exhibition to win by 2 shots over former NCAA Champion and PGA Tour rookie Aaron Wise and Nick Watney. The tournament victory was no walk-in-the-park, however.

Although Jason Day began Sunday with a 2-shot advantage over his playing partner Watney, multiple players were making a charge up the leaderboard and challenging the veteran from Australia. Even after 3 birdies at 7, 8, and 10, he only advanced his lead to 3-strokes. Day finally slipped up and made bogey at 13 and then another bogey at the short par-4 14th after hitting his drive into the water. ย

Aaron Wise took advantage of Dayโ€™s misfortune after having put together a marvelous Sunday round. Tied for the lead with Day on the back nine, the PGA Tour rookie was at 10-under par after making a testy par putt on 16 and put the pressure on Day.

Jason Day, however, rose to the occasion.

Jason birdied 16 and then went to the 17th – statistically the hardest hole on the course this week. And at 223 yards, it doesnโ€™t come as much of a surprise. With a 7-iron, he struck the pin, leaving all but a tap-in for birdie. And as no other competitors could get past the 10-under mark, Jason walked into the 18th green with a two stroke lead and a chance to relish and enjoy a soon-to-be victory.

His wife Ellie, son Dash and daughter Lucy all joined him on the green for the celebration once the final putt dropped.

Notables in the field: Phil Mickelson shot a final round 2-under 69 for a T5 finish. Bryson DeChambeau finished the tournament solo 4th at 8-under. Masters Champion Patrick Reed finished 8th at 6-under. Rory McIlroy finished at 3-under good for a T16.

Next week the PGA Tour heads to TPC Sawgrass for the PLAYERS Championship.
