Dustin Johnson Walks-Off to Regain #1 Ranking
Memphis, TN – World number one Dustin Johnson regains his title by lapping the field at the
2018 FedEx St. Jude Classic with a 6-shot victory on Sunday in Memphis. This is Johnson’s
18th PGA tour win and his second at TPC Southwind.PGA Tour rookie, Andrew Putnam finished Saturday tied for lead after a second-straight 64 in
Memphis only to be informed he would be going toe-to-toe in the final round with world number
2 (at the time) Dustin Johnson. Unfortunately for Putnam, the nerves showed very early on
Sunday as he carded a double-bogey on the par-4 434-yard opening hole. Andrew kept himself
in it as DJ was not able to get anything going on the front nine either, shooting an even par 35.
Only a 2 shot lead at the time, Johnson found a rhythm on the back after birdieing 13 and 16
while Putnam began to fade by carding all pars on his back nine. Standing in the fairway on 18,
with a 4 shot lead, Dustin hit his 171 yard approach into the green and drained it for an eagle!
The hole-out capped off his steady but strong finish as he beat the field (and his playing partner)
by 6 strokes to take home the hardware.
The win at the FedEx St. Jude Classic helped Johnson regain the world number one spot from
its previous owner – Justin Thomas. This also puts DJ in prime condition heading into next
weeks’ US Open at Shinnecock Hills where he is ironically paired with Justin Thomas and Tiger
Woods for his opening rounds.
