Bradenton, FL – 2020 PGA Championship winner Collin Morikawa now has a WGC win under his belt as he pulled away from a strong field this week in Florida at the Workday Championship. The WGC, which stands for World Golf Championships, is a series of tournaments with limited no-cut fields that payout higher than regular tour stops. In a field where 47 of the top-50 players in the world were playing, it is no easy task.
Similar to his play at the PGA Championship, the TaylorMade staffer played tremendously all week, navigating an already difficult course that had some extremely harsh conditions on Thursday and Friday. The 13th hole on Saturday afternoon teetered being boderline unfair as many players couldn’t keep the ball on the green. Some even found themselves chipping multiple times and watching the ball roll down to a collection area.
Morikawa managed to get away with a bogey at 13 while others weren’t so lucky. Australian Wade Ormsby posted a quadruple bogey on 13 while Patrick Reed posted a double bogey among others who struggled to make decent numbers on the hole. After the dust settled from Saturday’s carnage, Collin Morikawa had the 54-hole lead by 2 shots. The final round, it was all Collin. He was steady all afternoon and only needed a 3-under 69 to extend his lead to 3 strokes and cruise down the stretch for his first WGC victory.
With his win, Collin becomes the only player besides Tiger Woods to have a major and WGC before the age of 25. Next week, the PGA Tour heads to Arnold’s place for the Bay Hill in Orlando, Florida.
