Dublin, Ohio – Norwegian native and Oklahoma State grad Viktor Hovland breaks through for his first victory in the continental US on the PGA Tour at The Memorial Tournament presented by Workday. Not only does he gain automatic exemptions into the Tournament of Champions for next year, he also cashes a check worth almost ($3.6 million) as much as he made for the entire 2022 season.
Viktor did not exactly light up the course in his first three rounds, even despite the difficult scoring conditions. He stayed in his lane though and after a 3 under 69 on Saturday, gave himself a chance to top the leaderboard with a decent round on Sunday. Viktor’s front nine was not spectacular but when he stepped onto the par-4 10th tee, his luck surely turned around. He then proceeded to birdie 10, 11, 15 and 17. He also made a clutch putt on 18 to stay at 7 under par while the remaining groups and leaders finished their rounds.
Viktor made a late charge on Sunday to put himself into a position to force a playoff. Fortunately for Viktor, the then leader Denny McCarthy made a bogey on his 72nd hole to drop back into a tie for first with Hovland. Hovland and McCarthy went to the first playoff hole on the long par 418th. Hovland hit the fairway and green in regulation while McCarthy missed both but had a chip to get up and down. Hovland’s long birdie putt missed but he managed to make his par putt. McCarthy missed his par, lipping out and giving the win to Viktor.
I mentioned this was Viktor’s first PGA Tour victory in the continental US, but he does have three other PGA Tour victories. Two came in Mexico and the other in Puerto Rico but this win at Muirfield will be his first in the states.
Other notable players were Scottie Scheffler and Jordan Spieth who both finished in the top five. Rory also played well all week with a shot at the title before going backwards on Sunday, carding a three over 75. Next week the PGA Tour heads North for the RBC Canadien Open.
