Silvis, IL – Sepp Straka has won the 2023 John Deere Classic. In a come-from-behind style victory, he clawed from four strokes back to win the tournament by two with a score of 21-under par. Along with this being his second PGA Tour win in his career, he also earned $1.3 million and 500 FedEx Cup points.
The Austrian golfer proved that perseverance is key to becoming a PGA Tour winner. After a first round of one-over 73, he nearly recorded a 59 in his final round. With 9 birdies and an eagle on the scorecard, Straka was 11-under through 14 holes. While he’d ultimately double-bogey his last hole, that was his only blemish on a nearly perfect round of golf.
While Straka went out and took this championship for himself, it seemed like anybody’s tournament to win through three rounds. In fact, there were 12 different players within three strokes. The most notable and highest-ranked player in the field was Cameron Young who ultimately finished in a tie for 6th place with a score of 16-under-par. Also tied in 6th place was last year’s winner J.T. Poston along with five other players.
Next week the competition is going to dramatically ramp up as some of the best in the world head to The Renaissance Club for the 2023 Genesis Scottish Open. There, Xander Schauffele will face off against two of the top three ranked players in the world: Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy. While that tournament is certainly a big deal in its own right, undoubtedly these players will be using it as great practice for the Open Championship happening at Royal Liverpool the week thereafter.
