La Quinta, CA – Now a three time PGA Tour winner, Hudson Swafford secured the first continental US win of 2022 as The American Express Championship winner. In a week where the desert winds brought in some high scores early in the week, Hudson managed a spectacular final round 8-under 64 to win for the second time in his career in the desert. This tournament is unique because they use several different courses for play allowing for a 54-hole cut instead of the traditional 36. Nonetheless, Swafford was able to take advantage of every layout posting scores of 70, 65, 66, and 64 to round out his week.
Sunday’s final round led to a plethora of low scores. Reigning FedEx Cup Champion Patrick Cantlay finished off his week with a 4-under 68, good enough for a top 10 finish to start his year. Fellow Sea Island resident Brian Harman turned in a final round 8-under par to get to 20-under for the tournament yet only good enough for a tie for third. Tom Hoge who only has one professional win over a decade ago managed a second place finish at 21-under par. 2019 Houston Open winner Lanto Griffin also played well in his final round with a 5-under 67 to boost him to a tie for third.
Coming down the stretch in the final round, Hudson separated himself from the field by making eagle on the par-5 16th and a long birdie putt at the 17th for a comfortable 3 shot lead. Laying back off the tee on 18, Swafford was able to enjoy the walk up the final hole knowing he had secured the victory.
Next week, the PGA Tour heads to the coast in San Diego for the Farmers Insurance Open where Patrick Reed is the defending champion.
