Ponte Vedra Beach, FL – One year removed from when a pandemic halted the world of sports and the PGA Tour at the 2020 Players, Justin Thomas finds himself the victor at arguably the toughest test in golf. The 2021 Players Championship which is annually contested at TPC Sawgrass and the famous island green had no shortage of drama. The par-3 17th saw a record-setting 35 balls (second most for one round) in the water in round one.
For the second week in a row, the Saturday leaderboard was led by 2021 Arnold Palmer Invitational winner Bryson DeChambeau and European Tour veteran Lee Westwood, among others. Justin Thomas just barely made the cut by 2 shots, but managed to shoot a 64 and the lowest Saturday round to vault himself into a tie for 3rd heading into Sunday.
Sunday was packed with entertainment. Lee Westwood had his chances but even with birdies on 16 and 18, wasn’t able to post anything better than an even par day. Bryson DeChambeau doubled par-4 4th and even with an eagle on 16, was never able to catch Thomas.
Justin Thomas went birdie-eagle-birdie on 10-12 which pushed him up the leaderboard. Despite his one bogey on 14, he managed to birdie the par-5 16th before making a couple of clutch 2-putts to secure the clubhouse lead and ultimately, the win. This marks Justin’s 16th professional win but his first Players victory.
Next week, the PGA Tour heads down to PGA National for the Honda Classic.
