The Shot Scope Pro L5 rangefinder features a crystal clear OLED display. Once you switch to OLED, it’s hard to go back. Strong speed and accuracy. Excellent value.

Introduction
There have been loads of innovations in rangefinders over the past decade – built-in GPS, cart magnets, adaptive slope – but none of them really matter if you can’t read the display clearly. The major upgrade behind the new Shot Scope Pro L5 rangefinder is focused on that overlooked fundamental of readability. With a crispy red OLED display, the Pro L5 makes squinting into your rangefinder a thing of the past.

Set Up & Ease of Use
The basic functions of the Shot Scope Pro L5 will be intuitive to anyone who has experience with rangefinders. Pushing the blue button nearest your eye turns the unit on, and a second push gets your distance. A small but welcome refinement from the Pro L2 [review HERE] is that the dedicated slope switch has been moved to the top of the device with the other controls. The “M” button can be used to change from yards to meters
Shot Scope includes two CR2-3V batteries with the Pro L5, which is a nice little extra. Unless you play daily, one battery should last an entire season, but it’s always good to have a spare. Also, one thing that hasn’t changed from the Pro L2 is the battery door. Rather than screwing in and out, it just pries open with a tee or fingernail. My testing has shown this mechanism to be every bit as secure as the traditional screw-in battery doors.
Accuracy & Features
The red OLED display on the Shot Scope Pro L5 rangefinder is the headline feature for a reason. It’s sharp, clear, and easy to read. This is complemented by a smart, uncluttered layout in the viewfinder. I’ve never found “traditional” rangefinder displays to be an issue, but the OLED is clearly better. It’s like switching from HD to 4K – you don’t want to go back.

Turning to accuracy and speed, the Shot Scope Pro L5 rangefinder is outstanding. It consistently produced identical yardages when tested against other trusted rangefinders. The speed is excellent as well, just a fraction of a second slower than the very fastest lasers. And, as always, I want to emphasize that the speed differences I’m discussing would only be noticed by someone testing every rangefinder on the market. It’s unlikely a normal golfer would notice any difference between even the fastest and slowest models.

The Pro L5 is similar in size to the Pro ZR [review HERE] and Pro X [review HERE], just 5mm shorter. I called the Pro X a “comfortable full-sized” rangefinder which puts the Pro L5 on the border of full and mid-sized. It’s comfortable in my hand, particularly with the anti-slip coating. Unless your hands are well below average in size, I think you’ll find the Pro L5 comfortable, too.

Rounding out the features, the Shot Scope Pro L5 rangefinder has a cart magnet and 1,300 yards of range. The 7X magnification is among the best available. You’ll also get a slight vibration when the Pro L5 locks onto the flagstick – a nice confirmation that you have the correct yardage.

Value
The Shot Scope Pro L5 rangefinder retails for $229. This is a mid-market price, and the Pro L5 punches above that level thanks to the OLED display. It’s also worth mentioning that the Shot Scope Pro L5 comes with a 24 month warranty, which adds a lot to the value. Shot Scope makes a quality product, but knowing that you have insurance against anything weird is still a big plus.

Conclusion
Shot Scope continues to offer golfers a comprehensive array of options in both the rangefinder and GPS categories. The new Shot Scope Pro L5 rangefinder is a strong value and an easy choice for players who want the best, clearest display on the market.
