The Callaway Mack Daddy 2 Tour Grind wedge is a new option in an already popular wedge line. One of the most popular sole grinds on Tour is now available to the public.
Introduction
Callaway’s Mack Daddy wedges have always been noteworthy. The original Mack Daddys were the kings of spin before the USGA reduced the grooves; nothing chewed up urethane like they did. The Mack Daddy 2 sought to deliver similar spin with conforming grooves and found a home in the bags of thousands of golfers. With the new Mack Daddy 2 Tour Grind wedges, Callaway is bringing one of the most popular sole grinds on Tour to golfers everywhere.
Looks
The new Callaway Mack Daddy 2 Tour Grind wedges have a different look and vibe than the original Mack Daddy 2 wedges. Both the Mack Daddy 2 and the Mack Daddy 2 Tour are offered in chrome and slate finishes, but the Mack Daddy 2 Tour has a white and neon yellow paint scheme that really pops. Sticking with the neon yellow theme, Callaway also used a neon yellow and white Golf Pride New Decade Multi-Compound grip which is one of those small factors that really completes the look. The slate finish is my favorite of the two finishes and it offers some nice benefits such as no glare, and it will oxidize over time to produce that rusted “tour” look.
The shape of the Mack Daddy 2 Tour is a little less compact and a little more square than the Mack Daddy 2. Rest assured, it has a very appealing look at address. The face has Laser Milled Micro Grooves which makes for one of the coolest looking faces I’ve ever seen on a golf club.
Sound & Feel
One of the hallmarks of the Callaway Mack Daddy 2 Tour Grind wedge is how soft it is. This is immediately evident at first impact when you’ll notice that the sound of the Mack Daddy 2 Tour is a lot less clicky than most wedges you’re going to hit. There’s enough of a click to give you the audible feedback to know whether or not you made good contact, but it’s a nice soft muted sound.
Right in line with the sound, the 1020 carbon steel Mack Daddy 2 Tour wedge has an incredibly soft feel as well. Off-center shots did not have the sting that is typical in higher-level wedges, and shots in the middle of the face have a nice sweet, pure feel to them. All in all, the Mack Daddy 2 Tour wedge is a very soft and responsive wedge that is a pleasure to hit.
Performance
The Callaway Mack Daddy 2 Tour Grind wedge is much more than a good looking club made of a soft metal. This wedge is very well engineered and performs on the course. The reason the Tour grind is so popular is because it makes the wedge a more versatile, well-rounded club that can be used for different shots ranging from a high bunker shot to a tight 30 yard pitch. The relief in the heel and toe give you the ability to easily alter how you set the club at address and the straighter leading edge make it easier to make precise contact. In the bunker, the MD2 Tour cut through the sand very nicely and made sand shots remarkably easy.
Whenever the wedge discussion comes up, of course everyone wants to talk about spin. The Callaway Mack Daddy 2 has 39% larger grooves that gave me a lot of spin, but is far from uncontrollable. It’s a situation where us mere mortals may be able to zip a ball back a little more than we previously could. Additionally, the Laser Milled Micro Grooves provide an increased roughness on the face which increases the friction against the ball and this roughness will maintain as the grooves continue to wear.
Conclusion
I think golfers need to be more aware of the significance of a good wedge in their bag. True, if you’re hitting greens in regulation all day, you may not need to use it much, but a wedge can be that club that just saved your round because you needed to make that great sand save to save par and win your match, or maybe you make a nice hole out for birdie that will leave you with stories to tell of your heroic round of golf for the next week. Long story short, it’s important to have a really good, performing wedge and the Callaway Mack Daddy 2 Tour Grind is totally capable of being that club. Just because the word “Tour” is in the name does not mean that people should shy away from this wedge. The Tour Grind sole makes for a versatile wedge that makes it possible to get creative and come up with interesting solutions to save par.
