2022 RBC Heritage Recap

Hilton Head Island, SC – Jordan Spieth emerges once again victorious on Easter Sunday as the 2022 RBC Heritage Champion.  This same day last year, Spieth won the Valero Texas Open.  It seems he does well on the April holiday.  This is Jordan’s 13th career PGA Tour victory and moves him up to 11th in the FedEx Cup standings.

Jordan started off the week with a 69 coming off his missed cut at the Masters just a few days prior.  He grinded it out to shoot a pair of 68s on Friday and Saturday to put himself in contention on Sunday.  He found himself 3 shots back of the leaders Saturday afternoon.

Harold Varner III and Shane Lowry led the field Sunday morning.  The conditions were ripe on Sunday though as Cam Davis and JT Poston shot an eight under and seven under, respectively.  Varner didn’t have a particularly poor day but just didn’t have enough birdies to keep up with the low scores.  He made birdies at 4 and 9 but made all pars on the back which was only good enough for a T3 finish.  Lowry also had a chance with birdies at 4, 5, 6, and 11 to vault him to the top of the leaderboard.  Then disaster struck at the par-3 14th where he put one into the water for a double bogey.  Ultimately this cost him a trophy.

It was all Jordan on Sunday making eagles on 2 and 5 and a birdie at 8.  Talk about a strong start.  He managed to get to 12 under coming to 18 where he birdied the final hole.  Meanwhile, Patrick Cantlay made a move of his own as a few holes back, he made birdie at 17 to get to 13 under and forcing a playoff with Spieth.

The playoff went back to 18 where both players hit 3-woods and both found the fairway.  Both players then found the front bunker.  Spieth went first and almost drained it but putted out for par.    Cantlay’s fried egg lie went past the pin and he couldn’t convert the putt giving Jordan the victory.

Easter Sunday has been good to Spieth.  What falls on Easter in 2023 you ask?  Well, that’s the final round of the Masters.  Place your bets now!
