2021 Valspar Championship Recap

Burns Wins First PGA Tour Event

Palm Harbor, FL – Sam Burns (-17) won his first career PGA Tour tournament Sunday at the 2021 Valspar Championship.  Burns has been in great form recently and is one of the game’s brightest up and coming stars.  Now he’s no longer one of the most talented young players still searching for a win.

Burns beat Keegan Bradley to the finish line after firing a 68 to cap off rounds of 67, 63, and 69.  They were tied heading into the final round but Bradley couldn’t get out of neutral on Sunday, shooting even par to finish at -14, three back.  Burns moved into the top 50 in the world and 14th in the FedExCup.

Finishing behind Bradley T3 was Viktor Hovland and Cameron Tringale, one stroke back at -13.  Hovland shot the best round of the day by far, a -6 65 in tough conditions.  Abraham Ancer finished one stroke behind them in solo fifth.

Other players who had notable weeks included Max Homa, who looked like a contender heading into the final round one stroke back of the leaders and three clear of Ancer, Tringale, and others at -10, but finished with a disappointing 74 and a T6 finish; and Justin Thomas, who finished T13 at -7 and moved to number one in the FedEx Cup rankings.

Next week, the PGA Tour heads to Quail Hollow for the Wells Fargo Championship.  Last year’s edition was canceled due to COVID.  This year’s field includes Patrick Cantlay, Bryson DeChambeau, Rory McIlroy, Jon Rahm, and Xander Schauffele.
