2021 The Honda Classic Recap

Matt Jones Wins 2021 Honda Classic

Palm Beach Gardens, FL – Matt Jones started and finished strong to win the 2021 Honda Classic.  Jones shot perhaps the round of his life on Thursday with a 61 in difficult conditions and followed it up with solid play the rest of the way.  Despite seeing his massive first round lead evaporate and trailing Aaron Wise by three strokes heading into the weekend, Jones came back, shooting 69 Saturday to get back into the final group.

His final round 68 was enough to cruise to victory, 5 shots ahead of Brandon Hagy.  Hagy had some big ups and downs through the tournament, shooting 62 in the second round to get himself into a tie for second, only to shoot 76 Saturday.  He rebounded with a round of 66 on Sunday and his best-ever finish.

The win marked Jones’ second career PGA Tour victory, his last was the 2014 Houston Open.  The 40-year-old Aussie is not a typically a fixture at the top of PGA Tour leaderboards these days.  But a weaker field at this year’s tournament allowed him and number of other less-heralded players to shine.

Some of the other players who put in notable performances include Chase Seiffert, who fired a final round 64 to vault himself up the leaderboard and into T3, his best finish to date; Aaron Wise, who at times looked poised to win the tournament, only to falter in some key moments and end up T13 at -3; and J.B. Holmes who appeared in the final group but carded a disastrous 79 to finish T46 at +2.

Next week, those who qualify will head to Austin for the World Golf Championships – Dell Technologies Match Play, while others will head to the opposite field event, the Corales Puntacana Resort & Club Championship in the Dominican Republic.
