2020 The Arnold Palmer Invitational presented by MasterCard Recap

Orlando, FL – Everyone knows who Arnold Palmer is and what he’s done for the game of golf.  Now everyone will know Tyrrell Hatton as the winner of the 2020 Arnold Palmer Invitational presented by MasterCard.  The annual stop is a favorite among pros not just because the course is a great test but to honor the King who forever changed the game.  Well this week, it was Tyrrell Hatton’s favorite course.  He started off the week strong with a 68 and 69 to get himself in contention before the windy weekend when scores began to rise dramatically.  Shooting a total of 3-over par for both Saturday and Sunday, Tyrrell found himself holding the hardware on 18 Sunday afternoon after 2-putting the 18th for a one-shot win.

Tyrrell Hatton tamed the heavy winds to win his 1st PGA Tour title and he did it with a 2-over 74 in the final round which felt like a 10-under par round.  The scores averaged in the mid-70s as weather wreaked havoc on Bay Hill.  2017 Arnold Palmer Invitational Champion Marc Leishman gave Hatton a run for his money after he birdied holes 9 and 12 Sunday but wasn’t able to generate any more magic after that.  Hatton stayed focused and despite a 2-over 38 back nine which included a double-bogey on the 11th, he was able to hold off Marc and the rest of the competitors for a one-shot victory.

Low round on Sunday was a 3-under 69 carded by another Englishman Matthew Fitzpatrick after posting 5 birdies on the day with an unfortunate double-bogey on 17.  Ryan Moore was the only other player in the field to post a 2-under final round score.  Despite the only low scores, neither player was able to move into contention.  Everyone else was 1-under or worse in their final rounds.

Each year for the Bay Hill tournament, competitors show their appreciation to AP and honor him with small gestures or attire.  This year, Rickie Fowler sported a pink cardigan for one of his rounds while Bryson DeChambeau wore a pair of umbrella logo-ed golf shoes.  Even Rory had a subtle tribute by adding a pair of yellow pants to his scripting for the week.

Next week, the tour heads over to TPC Sawgrass for The Players Championship in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida.
