Augusta, Georgia – After more than a decade of attempts to complete the grand slam, Rory McIlroy has finally joined the elite (now) six man club as the 2025 Masters Champion. An absolute wild up and down final round that ended with a playoff between Rory and Justin Rose.
What a week for the first major of the year. 2024 Masters Champion Scottie Scheffler was attempting to become just the fourth player to win back to back Masters. Scottie never held the lead but remained near the top of the leaderboard the entire tournament. He made a final round run with a 3 under 69, but it wasn’t enough to catch McIlroy and Rose at the top. 25 year old Swedish rookie sensation Ludvig Aberg made his name known this week with his superb play. Ludvig’s final round consisted of five birdies but a poor finish at his 72nd hole led to a triple bogey and a 7th place finish.
2013 U.S. Open winner Justin Rose looked like he was primed for his first green jacket after leading the field on both Thursday and Friday with rounds of 65 and 71. However, a third round of 75 set him back and he had an uphill battle on Sunday. He finished with birdies on 16 and 18 to get into a tie for first and ultimately get into a playoff.
The final pairing of Rory McIlroy and Bryson DeChambeau was exactly what golf needed on a Sunday afternoon in April in Georgia. At the start of the round, the pair exchanged three two-shot swings in a matter of just six holes. Despite Rory making double bogey at the first, he followed it up with birdies at three, four, and nine. Bryson ultimately fell off after making bogeys at three, four, 12 and a double at 11.
With a three shot lead, Rory’s approach on the 13th found the water and almost cost him the tournament outright. He roared back with a two putt birdie at 15 and an unlikely birdie at 17. With a one stroke lead, Rory blasted a drive on 18 in the center of the fairway but made another mistake missing the green right and into the bunker. He couldn’t get up and down, forcing a playoff.
The playoff was just one hole – the par four 18th. Rose stuck his approach to 12 feet when Rory spun back his approach to just four feet. Rose missed right while Rory sunk his birdie putt and immediately fell to his knees. This win allows Rory to become just the sixth player to win the grand slam in addition to his overall fifth major victory.
Next week, the PGA Tour heads over to Hilton Head Island for the RBC Heritage at Harbour Town Golf Links where Scottie Scheffler will defend his title.
