The 2024 Genesis Invitational Recap

Pacific Palisades, CA – Hideki Matsuyama has won the 2024 Genesis Invitational.  This was a come-from-behind win, clawing back from a six-shot deficit to earn his ninth PGA Tour title.  His winning score was 17-under par.  With this win, he earns a massive prize of $4 million and becomes the first player from Japan to win the Genesis.

Matsuyama looked like a man possessed in the final few holes of this tournament.  On back-to-back holes, he stuffed two iron shots inside a foot.  He carded six birdies on the back nine which led to a 9-under round of 62.  That score was just one shot off from the course record at Riviera Country Club.

It was no easy scoring day though, as the average back nine score in the final round was just shy of 36 for the day despite Matsuyama carding a 30.  Nobody felt the difficulty of today more than Patrick Cantlay, though.  Through 36 holes, he led the tournament by five strokes.  However, he would falter on the final day, carding a score of 13-under-par, and would finish in a tie for fourth place.

There was also a great deal of attention on a pair of players who didn’t even make it to the final round, though.  Those two players would be Tiger Woods and Jordan Speith who exited the tournament for different reasons.  Speith signed an incorrect scorecard and was disqualified.  Before then, Woods came down with an illness and withdrew from the tournament.

Next week the PGA Tour travels south of the border to play the Mexico Open.  Tony Finau will look to defend his title as the 2023 champion of that tournament.  That field won’t be the most difficult, though.  That’s because only three other players inside the top 50 Official World Golf Ranking will be in attendance.
