The 2023 World Golf Championships Dell Technologies Match Play Recap

Austin, Texas – After playing more than 100 holes since Wednesday, Sam Burns holds off Cameron Young in the final match to win the 2023 WGC Dell Match Play.  This is Sam’s first win in the 2022-23 wrap around season and his sixth professional victory.

It is disappointing to know this event will be sunset after this year considering the amount of fantastic golf we watched this weekend.  The final four players consisted of the 2022 Masters winner, a four time major winner and two of the up and coming players on the PGA Tour.

Sunday’s matches were arguably the best we had seen all week and it didn’t disappoint.  First up was Rory McIlroy vs Cameron Young.  Rory held control of this match virtually all day until the final hole when Young tied up the match with a birdie to force extra holes.  Cameron then birdied the first extra hole to shock Rory and advance to finals.

On the other side of the bracket was the final four match of Scottie Scheffler vs Sam Burns.  This match went back and forth as well.  Sam Burns held the lead majority of the front nine before Scottie rattled off three wins in a row to take a 2up lead of his own on the back nine.  It came down to the final hole and Sam attempting to make his fourth birdie in a row.  Instead, Scottie birdied the short par 4 18th to force extra holes.  This extended the match for three more holes when Sam made birdie to Scottie’s par to advance to the finals with Cameron Young.

The Sunday afternoon round and final match of the week was setup to be a showdown.  Unfortunately, Sam Burns had other plans.  Cameron got off to hot start by going 1up through four holes.  Then Burns found his rhythm rattling off birdies on three of his next four holes.  He kept up that trend by birdieing every hole on the back nine until, well, the match ended at 6&5.  It was an exciting week in Austin and this week we all realized how much we will miss this event in 2024.  Lets all hope a sponsor steps up before next Spring to bring this event back.

Next week the PGA Tour heads to San Antonio for the Valero Texas Open and the final opportunity for players to qualify for the first major of 2023.
