The 2023 PGA Championship Recap

Rochester, NY – Brooks Koepka has won the 2023 PGA Championship.  With this victory, Koepka becomes just the 20th player in history to win 5 major championships.  Not only did he earn the coveted Wanamaker trophy, but also earned $3.15 million.

After letting The Master’s championship slip through his fingers, finishing in second Koepka was a man on a mission at this year’s PGA Championship.  Through some of the worst rainy conditions in recent major championship memory, he persevered, leading the tournament through three rounds.  While Victor Hovland (T2) and Scottie Scheffler (T2) would both come close, ultimately Koepka fended them off to win his third PGA Championship title.

Normally, notables include the top of the World Golf Rankings.  However, that wasn’t the whole story this week.  Instead, the player that stole the hearts of many fans was the 46-year-old club pro, Michael Block.  After becoming the only PGA professional to make the cut, he became a media darling this week, giving honest interviews and incredible play.  His stellar golf culminated in a hole-in-one on championship Sunday and ultimately a top 15 finish that secured another PGA Championship invitation to play next year at Valhalla.

Other notables included many of the LIV Tour players.  Despite not competing as often or with as much competition, they continue to remain as threats to win major events.  Besides Koepka, the best finishes for LIV Tour players included Bryson DeChambeau (T4), Cameron Smith (T9), and Patrick Reed (T18).

Next week’s event is the Charles Schwab Challenge.  There Sam Burns will look to defend his title after winning it in 2022.  A repeat title would mark his 4th PGA Tour win.  Many of the world’s best will be vying for that same title too, as 11 of the top 30 in the world are set to compete.  Besides Burns, expect to see Jordan Speith, Tom Hoge, and Scheffler in attendance.
