McKinney, Texas – After more than five winless and tough years, Jason Day finds himself in the winners circle again as the 2023 AT&T Byron Nelson champion. This is Jason’s 13th PGA Tour victory.
It was certainly an emotional victory for Jason after battling through injuries and generally just not scoring well. On top of that, he lost his mom a little over a year ago. So to win on Mother’s Day was fitting for the 35 year old.
As for the golf, Jason certainly had his work cut out for him coming into the week. World number two Scottie Scheffler and hometown favorite came in strong by posting opening rounds of 64-64. Scottie struggled on Saturday with an even par round and despite a final round 65, it wasn’t enough to stay atop the leaderboard.
Oklahoma State grad and PGA Tour rookie Austin Eckroat made some waves as he vaulted himself up the leaderboard on Saturday by posting an 8 under 63. Austin had a nice final round finish of 65 and although it wasn’t good enough to win, he is a guy that we will likely see more of in 2023.
2017 Players Champion Si Woo Kim also made some noise late on Sunday birdieing three of his final five holes to get to 22 under par. Unfortunately for Kim, Day had also birdied his 72nd hole to get in the clubhouse at 23 under par. That score of 23 under was eventually good enough for the win.
Next week, the second major gets under way as the PGA Championship gets underway in Rochester, NY at Oak Hill golf club.
