The 2022 Charles Schwab Challenge Recap

Fort Worth, Texas – The dream season continues for Sam Burns as he overcomes a seven shot deficit to win his third victory this year at the 2022 Charles Schwab Challenge.  Sam began the final round seven shots back of Masters Champion and the world number one Scottie Sheffler before closing the gap and forcing a playoff late Sunday afternoon.

Don’t let the scores this week fool you. The conditions this week at Colonial Country Club were anything but easy.  With 30mph gusts on Saturday, only two players managed bogey free rounds.  The 54-hole leader Scottie Sheffler 3-putted the 17th green for his only bogey of the day.  Last week’s PGA Champion Justin Thomas along with the runner up Will Zalatoris both missed the cut this week.

Davis Reilly is another name you may have not heard of but he’s another rookie looking to make a name for himself in 2022.  Davis actually grabbed the solo lead at Colonial on the back nine on Sunday before going plus four in his final 6 holes.

Nonetheless, the Sunday before Memorial Day was all about Sam Burns.  It isn’t often that a player can come from behind by seven shots to win on the PGA Tour.  The fields are too deep and too talented.  So on a day that the scoring average was 3 over par, Sam Burns managed to shoot a final round 65, including 7 birdies.  This forced a playoff with the 54-hole leader – Scottie Sheffler.  Scottie managed to not make any birdies in his final round to go along with two bogeys.  A surprisingly poor final round by the golfer who has typically not had any recent issue closing out golf tournaments.  Ultimately, Sam was able to drain a 40 foot birdie putt just off the green on the first playoff hole to overcome Sheffler.

This is Sam’s third PGA Tour victory this season and fourth win over the past year.
