Si Woo Kim Wins 2023 Sony Open in Hawaii
Si Woo Kim (-18) won the 2023 Sony Open in Hawaii. He beat Hayden Buckley by one stroke. Si Woo shot a pair of 64’s on the weekend to vault himself to the top of the leaderboard. The 27-year-old South Korean won his fourth career PGA Tour event and perhaps reminded fans of his prodigious talent. It was his first win since the 2021 American Express.
Coming down the stretch, Kim birdied the 72nd hole to force Buckley to do the same. Buckley came up a little short with his second into the par 5 18th but ended up with a 12 footer to force a playoff. He failed to cash it in and finished in solo second. His first win will have to wait but he clearly looks to be a player to watch going forward.
Behind Kim and Buckley was Chris Kirk (-15), who had a great week but couldn’t take it deep enough on Sunday to challenge the winner. Andrew Putnam, David Lipsky, and Ben Taylor finished T4 at -14.
Other players who had notable weeks included Jordan Spieth, who was part of the 18-hole lead but ended up missing the cut after shooting a second round 75; Tom Kim, the pre-tournament betting favorite who also missed the cut; and Sungjae Im, another top 25 player in the world who also missed the cut.
Next week, the PGA Tour heads back to the mainland for the American Express in Palm Springs. Hudson Swafford is the defending champion but won’t be present to defend, as he joined LIV Golf in June. The field includes top players such as Jon Rahm, Xander Schauffele, Scottie Scheffler, Patrick Cantlay, and Tony Finau.
