Memphis, TN – In a week where every player gets a paycheck, University of Alabama product Justin Thomas took home the largest of them as the 2020 WGC FedEx St. Jude Invitational champion. Justin birdied 2 of the final four holes on Sunday to break away from the pack for a 3-shot lead over Daniel Berger, Brooks Koepka, Phil Mickleson and Tom Lewis for his first World Golf Championship victory.
The PGA Tour continues to be fanless this week and it remains unknown when fans will be allowed back to watch the greatest players in the world. In the meantime, viewers have been treated to some tremendously entertaining golf. Sunday afternoon drama was no exception as we were treated to multiple major winners taking turns atop the leaderboard. Phil Mickleson, Brooks Koepka, and Rickie Fowler all shared the lead at some point in the final round.
54-hole leader Brendon Todd and final group playing partner Rickie Fowler both fell flat posting 2 of the worst scores of the day and dropping back into a tie for 15th. Justin Thomas started the day 4 strokes back of the lead but after going 4-under on the front nine with a perfect scorecard, the lead had vanished. Thomas gave one back at the 12th but as able to gain some momentum with birdies at 15 and 16.
Brooks Koepka was the closest player to catching Thomas. With only 1 hole to play, Koepka was only one shot back. He needed a birdie to tie but got too aggressive with the tee shot and hit it into the water, forcing a penalty that would result in a double bogey, good for a tie for 2nd.
This is Justin’s 14th professional victory and second world golf championship. Next week, the first major of 2020 will be held at TPC Harding Park where the PGA Championship will be played without fans.
