Palm Beach Gardens, Fl – Keith Mitchell birdies the 72nd hole at the 2019 Honda Classic to secure his first PGA Tour victory. Mitchell started the day off just one shot back of the 54-hole leader, Wyndham Clark but a strong back-nine helped him avoid a playoff and win outright.
Mitchell got off to a very slow start Sunday by bogeying the 1st and 2nd holes but was able to get back to even par on the day with birdies on 3 and 9. Keith stumbled with a bogey on the 11th before birdieing 12, 13, & 15. Also making Sunday charges were Rickie Fowler and Brooks Koepka, both of which managed birdies on 18 to get to 8-under par and a tie for the lead (temporarily). Both were several groups in front of Mitchell, anxiously waiting for a playoff. Mitchell drove his tee shot left on 18 and into a bunker, forcing a layup for his second into the reachable par-5. With a wedge in hand, Mitchell managed to stick his approach to about 15 feet and a chance to putt for the win. A 2-putt would force a playoff with Koepka and Fowler, but Mitchell had different plans, draining the 15-footer dead center of the cup.
Mitchell’s win in Palm Beach Gardens in Florida gives him exemptions into the Masters and the Players Championship in just a few weeks. The most impressive round of the final day went to Ryan Palmer, who posted a 7-under 63 on Sunday to grab the clubhouse lead early in the afternoon. Palmer wasn’t the only one making noise at PGA National as Vijay Singh managed to finish 6th at 56 years old!
Next week, the PGA Tour heads to Bay Hill for the Arnold Palmer Invitational presented by MasterCard where Rory McIlroy is the defending champion.
